The butteri are the legendary cattle breeders and horsemen of the Maremma, a rugged coastal region that stretches from the plains of northern Lazio to the beaches and inland areas of the southern Tuscany. Their pastoral way of life is believed to date back to the spread of agriculture during Etruscan times. Saveri’s photographic work is a documentary visual exploration into the historic, but threatened, culture of some of the last remaining groups of working butteri and their devoted followers in the Maremma.
