Learn about a little known footnote of America’s history! In the midst of the bicycle popularity of 1897, twenty black soldiers, an army surgeon and a reporter were led by a white twenty-five year old lieutenant as they rode bicycles from Fort Missoula, Montana to St Louis, Missouri. It was a means of testing whether or not the even-wheeled bicycle had a future in the U.S. Army.
In the summer of 2010, in a quest to better understand the soldiers and the journey, Mike Higgins, teacher from Deaver, WY, took his own bicycle and retraced the route! Come and here his story. Higgins’ presentation will cover a wide range of topics, such as the original bicycle corps, modern bicycle touring, genealogy and western history. This is sure to be a popular program. Arrive early for the best seats. Advance registration is not required but would be appreciated.
