Time:

Event Description:
Individuals can avoid getting lost with a 3-week class on maps, starting April 13
Sandra Frost will teach students how to avoid becoming the subject of a search and rescue operation in, “Maps for Fun & Safety.” The three-part course meets on Wednesdays, Apr. 13,20, 27 from 6:30-8 p.m. in Northwest College’s Fagerberg Building, Room 20. The course fee is $10. There is an April 6 registration deadline.
Participants will learn how to read paper maps and use a handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) to navigate the mountains and other challenging off road sites. Frost, an avid outdoorsman, will teach the history of mapmaking, the use of topographic maps and a compass, and provide an introduction to using a GPS. Students will need to bring their own topographic maps and compass and their own GPS, if they have one. The course will include hands on demonstrations of compass and GPS use, contour map reading, projections, resources and the pros and cons of GPS use.
“Sandy’s course may actually save your life if you are a hiker or otherwise enjoy recreating in remote locations,” according to Dave Sauceda, PVCE program coordinator.
Preregistration is required. To sign up or for more information, visit www.MoreLearningFun.org or call Powell Valley Community Education at 754-6469.
PVCE programs are provided by Park County School District No. 1 Board of Cooperative Educational Services (PCSD No. 1 BOCES), created by an agreement between Northwest College and Park County School District No. 1.
