CODY, Wyo. ─ As part of their series of free educational presentations, the East Yellowstone Chapter of Trout Unlimited will host Montana State University Regents Professor Emerita of Earth Sciences Cathy Whitlock, who will give a presentation on climate change in the Yellowstone region Tuesday, April 11, at 7 p.m.
Whitlock’s presentation will take place at the Wyoming Game and Fish office, located at 2 Tilden Trail in Cody.
Whitlock studies paleo-vegetation, fire and the relationship to past climates. Since coming to Montana State University, she has developed a paleoecology lab on campus and was the founding director of MSU's Institute on Ecosystems. Her research has taken her to local sites in the Greater Yellowstone region and to Tasmania, New Zealand and Argentina.
She earned her bachelor’s from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, as well as her Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Seattle.
She has been recognized for her contributions with many awards and appointments, including her selection as a fellow of the Geological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In 2014, Whitlock received the international E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Technology Pioneer Award, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation of biodiversity. Her dedication to research and mentorship recently earned her election into the National Academy of Sciences. She is the first Montanan to receive this distinction.
